Back to work!
So, I officially went back to work this past Saturday where I did a stint as a bartender for a wedding being held at one of our properties. I did pretty good in tips too, and it's been decided that from now on I'm the designated bartender for any weddings booked at our properties. Sounds good to me :)
And today I went in for four hours to learn our new reservation system - it is incredibly easy. Way easier than what we were using when I first started. There are a few key differences, other than just being a new interface for us, but the system makes so much more sense than our old one. And it's much harder to screw it up. And the fact that it auto-audits for us means we don't have to have somebody on site at night for the purpose of the audit. Neither property is big enough to actually need a desk person 24/7 these days - the site I started at was manned 24/7 but the other site has never had 24/7 staffing. The managers are on call at all times, and I let the general manager know that as I literally live the closest to both properties that if somebody is needed after hours to just give me a call so I can pop down (the GM lives a 30 minute drive away, and the other manager tends to just not answer her phone...go figure).
And out of all the staff who were there before we shut down due to Covid-19, three of them are not being asked back at all. This is due in part to them not being team players or all that reliable. Two of them were international students who would have had to go back to their home countries if possible anyway, but even if they had stayed in town they weren't going to be asked back. The other one was a complete flake who couldn't make up her mind what she wanted out of the job, and she was often butting heads with our GM.
This may mean that we'll be looking for a couple folks to help fill in the gaps, but we'll have to wait and see how it all shakes out. I know that I'll be moving between the two properties as needed, and that I won't have any cafe shifts due to not being able to open the cafe at this time. Not that I really mind at all because I'm honestly not a huge fan of cooking for a living anymore, so if I don't have to do it, I won't. Easy enough, right?
I found out that one of our people who helped with the front desk and accounting is being moved to a different location. I don't know what other location that could be, but I know that I'll find out when the time comes. Again, I don't mind because it means more hours for me.
I love my little hotel team - the staff we have fits well together, and those of us who are left are more than capable of handling more than one job. I'm going to be further cross-trained to allow me to handle the new line of business that has opened up in the hotel for when their admin person isn't in, and with the spa portion of the business switching to a new booking system I will be learning that one too.
The lady who was teaching me the new hotel reservation system was quite glad to hear that I've got some bookkeeping training and experience because that means I'm able to help out with some of the work that has been thrown at her, despite her not having enough time to do it all. I really don't mind, because with both our properties being smaller, I would probably go out of my mind with boredom if I didn't have something to do!
I'm also looking at this as being experience I can put to good use if I decide to try my luck at another hotel. No, I don't plan on leaving where I'm at now, at least not anytime soon, but it never hurts to keep my options open. Especially at my age...even though, yet again, I blew my co-worker's mind today when she found out how old I am - she thought I was much younger! I'll take it :)
