Today was the big day - my daughter is now living with her partner and roomies.
After a kerfuffle with U-Haul concerning how to pay, I arrived at my apartment shortly after 9:15am after having stopped at a friend's place to pick up a chaise lounge and then a Dollarama to buy all new pillows for my daughter because her old ones were getting tossed into the trash today.
It took us about an hour to load all the garbage into the van and then my daughter came with me to the dump. At least 20-30 minutes waiting in line before we were directed to a spot to back up to so we could toss all the bags we had. One thing that surprised me was the smell of all the bags in the back of the van while we were waiting in line...it was kinda gross, but it's likely because we were in close quarters with it that we noticed it. I'm very glad it's all gone now. Not that there still won't be additional bags of garbage gathered as I go through the rest of the stuff on the floor and in my room, but it's nowhere near as bad now that we've gotten so much out of the place.
A stop at Tim Horton's on the way back from the dump saw us revive with breakfast and a couple of mochas. Then it was time to start getting my daughter's stuff out of her room and ready to haul down two flights of stairs and into the cargo van. This was her first time really dealing with packing her own stuff, and she realized that she probably should have started packing her things at least a month ago instead of starting only last weekend, and even then she was only cherry picking what seemed easier.
It took us about four hours to get most of her stuff packed into the van - she still has a few items here but she will pick them up when she has a chance, or I will somehow get them dropped off to her. For now they will live in a bin in a spot that I will not trip over in the middle of the night.
She was panicking about it taking forever to unpack the van after how long it took us to load it. But she learned today that unloading is quicker than loading. It took 40 minutes at most to get her stuff into her new place. It helps too that her partner and one of her roomies was able to help unload. And that they didn't have to deal with two full flights of stairs.
I will say that her new bedroom is about half the size she had while living with me, but she says that it's only until the end of July when one of the roomies moves out and then they are all swapping bedrooms and the smallest room (currently my daughter's bedroom) will be for storage and the cat's stuff. I don't know how she's going to fit her bed, dresser, and desk into it until then. But she knew what she was getting into before moving.
I did offer to rent a truck or van at some point for them so they can get rid of the accumulated garbage at the new place. I was more than a little bit shocked at the state of the place, but my daughter knew what she was getting into before the official move. I will keep telling myself that until I can come to terms with the mess of the place. I know I really can't say much because my place has been a state for ages, but at least I made a huge dent into the mess today by getting rid of at least 20 large bags of garbage. Such is life, I suppose.
Anyhow, the day's exertions are starting to hit me hard and I need to crawl into bed. I don't know what time I will wake up tomorrow, but we'll see. I've got stuff I need to get done if I'm going to be painting my daughter's old bedroom and getting it set back up as my bedroom. I do know that my desk is not going back in there though as the plan is to finally move it into my living room so I can turn what is currently my bedroom into my storage/craft space.
Here's to hoping I don't wake up panicking because I can't hear/see my daughter!
