New job! I'm in the hotel business, baby :)

New job has been acquired and my first shift was this past Monday :)

No more overnight shifts in a grocery store where I was only getting paid minimum wage plus a small overnight shift differential, and nowhere near enough hours to survive on.

I never thought I'd work in a hotel ever again, but here I am, and it's not all housekeeping either. In fact, I haven't touched a room yet although the plan is to train me on how to do that for this particular hotel. So far, I've been mostly trained for the front desk/guest services and cafe, and I'm learning a great deal.

I've already put in three days and I'm picking up the reservation software way quicker than anybody expected. As it is, I checked somebody in yesterday entirely on my own because the person who was training me was on the phone with a guest booking eleven room nights, and I didn't want the incoming guests to have to wait a long time. I did explain that I was new but I would do my best to help them out, and I managed to get everything done! The person training me was keeping an eye on me in case I ran into any issues, but he was impressed that I managed to click what needed to be clicked, had the room keycards programmed, and all the information updated in the system as well. The only thing he had to help me with was the deposit pre-authorization as it wasn't the most straight-forward process due to there being a payment for the room's booking being done through a third-party site.

I feel so comfortable there already, and it probably helps that it's not an insanely busy location in terms of hotel stuff. There is an attached spa that is routinely very busy, but I won't be handling a lot of stuff up there other than when I'm in the cafe, and for that I'll be dealing with basic food items and drinks. Which is perfectly fine by me!

Considering that I was originally only applying for the cafe, which was offering two shifts a week at the time, I'm happy that they decided to cross-train me so I could get better hours. My first two weeks are 40hrs each, and I haven't worked that amount of hours since I completed my training at the grocery store! And the hours are WAY better, so that is a definite bonus right there.

This weekend is going to be insane due to Valentine's day, and I know that I will be put to the test. But I know I can handle it. I haven't cooked much in the way of breakfast for ages, especially for a large crowd of people, but our menu is simple enough, thankfully.

I'm off today so it's time to relax for a bit. Especially now that I've replaced the bedframe that broke under me a few weeks ago. I was going to wait until I could afford a new mattress, but I was getting tired of hauling my sorry ass up off the floor each time I had to get up to go pee or in the mornings when my alarm went off. And when I get a new mattress (I'm planning on upsizing) I'll switch bedframes with my kid because they've got a bedframe that will expand up to a queen-size mattress whereas mine is only good for a twin.

I'm feeling a bit like a nap is in order, so it's time to give my new bedframe a test!
