Carpal tunnel issues scuttling my plans...ugh.

So, I am slowly returning to the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) - so much has changed since I last played, and a very large part of me is worried that if I lay out the money to build a new garb wardrobe and all that fun stuff that I will be told that I can't actually go back, that the information I was given a few months ago was completely incorrect. Which is why I haven't taken the step of getting a paid membership yet.

Plus, I was debating whether or not to use my old SCA persona or create a new one. My tastes have changed a great deal since I last played, and I suppose I want to remove myself from the painful memories of my former time in the SCA. Back when a lot of people I thought were friends turned out to be anything but.

I had planned on getting back into rapier fighting but carpal tunnel pain has reared its ugly head in the worst way since I was originally diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. I think it's due in a very large part to my current job, but such is life, and it's a job I enjoy for the most part. I can barely manage a pair of scissors right now, so holding a sword would be a very bad idea. I will be speaking to my doctor at my next appointment to ask what exercises I can do to help, but in the meantime I will not be making any plans to return to rapier fighting. It sucks, but there it is.

I have decided to veer away from my old persona - late period Scottish, and move more towards late period French. It does mean researching a new name and background story, as well as making appropriate garb. Part of me is halfway considering adapting my old persona and backstory to a potential new one, complete with name change. I am grateful that I never did get around to registering my old SCA name or arms as this will make that part of it much easier. And even though I still have old Award of Arms scroll floating around here, I seem to recall that there is no record of it in the old SCA records for some reason. It may well have revoked all those years ago when things went to shit, so it will mean that I get to start all over again. Woo?

This time around I plan on having fun. I know that there is a push towards me getting a paid membership so I can take over the role of shire Herald, but I honestly don't think I am ready to take on any sort of office. Especially one as important as Herald. I have looked into it, and I've joined a couple of SCA heraldry groups, but it seems like there is so damn much to remember. Thank goodness for the internet though because it is so much easier to get things checked out than it used to be. But it is fun to not hold an office - no reports to local seneschal or any other up-lines, no record keeping at all, and being able to actually DO stuff at events. Oh, I'll volunteer for gate and voice heraldry, no problem, but I'm not going to rush into holding an office no matter how much people beg. Right now I just don't have the executive functioning capability to be effective in any office, no matter how minor.

So. I'll focus on the crafty stuff for now and slowly work on putting garb together, even if it means I live in early period stuff temporarily while my wrist heals up. Besides, early period is comfy and doesn't require stays or boned support!
