Three days off back to back, and I'm very happy for it!

I was supposed to be off all this week but because the spa manager couldn't get off her ass to find out if I would still get vacation pay with us being partially shut down I decided that I would work as many shifts as I could get this week. 28 hours is nothing to sneeze at, plus there is a good chance that I'll make another $50 on top of that if I have to stay at the hotel overnight.

Anyhow, back to my three days off back to back.

Yesterday was my first day off and I spent a good chunk of it just sleeping. I did go out grocery shopping and came home $200 shorter, but with five bags of groceries. Six if you include the small one I'd put the milk into.

It's normal for me to sleep the first day of any block of days I get off, but it is not often I do my grocery shopping on that day. Perhaps I need to get into the habit because it frees up the next day for house stuff that needs to get done.

Today, I was up and out of the house before 11am. I was on a mission to get something to help draft-proof my apartment door which will also help to keep the cost of heating this place down. I went to the Dollarama downtown with the intent to find some sort of insulating/weatherproofing tape to put around my doorframe. No luck, but I did find a sheet of sticky thick felt that I figured would help a lot. I also found some other stuff that I didn't necessarily need...almost $50 later. Then a stop at the nearby Subway for lunch for the kid and I before taking a short taxi ride home.

I took everything I got out of the shopping bag, my sub onto my desk, and let the kid know that her sub was in the fridge for when she decided to crawl out of bed.

After I ate and played around online a little bit I then set about cutting up the felt I'd bought and seeing if it would work for what I wanted. It sure did! Added to the rubber scraper thingy I put on the bottom of the door last night the apartment is already managing to hold onto its heat and none of the cold air is coming in around the door. Success!

Once that was done I decided that the bathroom needed a good scrub. I got all the garbage off the floor, gave it a good sweep, and then washed it. Actual hot water and floor cleaner, and a mop! And the harder to mop up areas got a bit of Vim liquid and a scrub brush taken to them. Much better! And the sink area was also scrubbed and cleaned. The toilet was already cleaned a few days ago so that I could install one of those Scrubbing Bubbles cleaning sticker gel thingies - I'm surprised it worked, to be honest, because I've long thought that they weren't worth the money. But I snagged one at the Dollarama a few days ago and figured that for $3 I'd try it. It's been working so far, but we'll see if it can hold it's own against the mold that likes to grow in the toilet. If it does, then I will buy another one of them and keep going. Anything that saves me having to scrub the toilet is worth it.

I still have more to do, but I'm making progress. For now my room is mostly on hold - as long as I get get to my desk, bed, and door, it's all good. And so long as I have clean clothing when I need it, I'm not in a rush for that right now either. Why? Because it will all work itself out once I have the more public areas of the apartment cleared out. Starting with the kitchen as it's the first room you see when you walk in, and it's a state and a half right now.

Mostly it's a matter of putting things where they go and bagging up garbage and recyclables. I've already bought a couple of boot trays to rest the garbage bags in before they get carried down to the basement, just in case of any leaks. And I've got a couple of recyclable bins to use for the recyclables too, with the intent of eventually turning a portion of my landing into a recycling/garbage area...I just have to find a new home for my shoes and boots first! And then my boot trays will be used under the shoe racks I need to buy to replace the bent one I'm using right now.

I'm doing things in small chunks though so I don't get overwhelmed - when that happens I just completely stop doing anything and the place just gets worse. And I know that soon enough the kid will move out, and I can use one of the bedrooms for storage - put things into the room and forget about them until I have the metaphoric spoons to deal with the stuff. Until then I will have a bastion of doom boxes and bags created to go through when I have the mental and physical capacity to deal with clearing them out.

In the meantime, I'm tempted to have a nap for an hour before heading out for coffee with a friends. Ah, and when I'm out next I need to venture someplace where I can get a tube of silicone caulking for my apartment door where the frame is supposed to meet the wall - there's a huge gap there which is probably not helping with keeping the heat in. Oh well, such is life sometimes!

Tomorrow I will plug away at the kitchen if I don't get to it tonight. I usually start with the dishes, counters, and stovetop and work my way towards the door. It's just easier that way because as I fill up garbage/recycling bags I just put them near the door or right outside of it on the landing until I can get them into the basement. Then the hope is to stay on top of the kitchen and move onto the living room.

The goal is to finally get my apartment into good enough shape where I can stay on top of the mess and clutter. No more 'forgetting' to put garbage and recycling on the curb on garbage day. No more piles of stuff on my kitchen table, counter, stove, dryer, and floor. Hello to being able to vacuum on a regular basis, and dusting at least once a week.

And I have decided that I want to replace my desk. The keyboard tray is not in a useful spot in comparison to my monitor, and I don't have enough storage either under or on my desk. The hutch on it is next to useless because if I put too much on top of it the damn thing sags! Which is why I haven't put my printer onto it because that would like cause the hutch to sag worse. Not something I really want to deal with any longer.

Oh well, my bed is calling me for that nap so off I go!
