I'm pretty sure I'm being groomed to take on management of the spa - the past three days saw me run the spa while my boss takes a few days off. She is back on Wednesday and it should be interesting to see how things go.
The next couple of days the spa is closed and we reopen on Tuesday. And I'm in charge again on Tuesday when the spa opens back up. It's not often that this sort of thing happens, but apparently I'm trusted enough to be left in charge for more than a day or two.
I also made a couple of arbitrary decisions in the past couple of days that I'm not sure if my boss would have felt comfortable doing.
One, a friend of mine wants to work with us and my boss is over the moon over it, and my friend was asking yesterday about when she could come in to start training - I said it's really up to my boss, but that I felt that having her come in next Saturday would be a great idea. Saturdays tend to be fairly low-key, which is good for a new employee, so I told my friend that I would pencil her in for that day and run it past my boss on Wednesday. I figure it's a slow enough day, so why not, right?
Two, we have a new esthetician during her work-term with us, and today I had her shadow one of our other estheticians so she saw how we do a few things, and then had her work with two of our estheticians to handle a group appointment. This was partially because we had a sick call and if I'd cancelled the one person in the group that we would have lost all three. She was thrilled to be doing more than laundry, and both the estheticians who she worked with were very impressed with her work. I suggest that she keep bringing her tools with her so that I can get her in doing services while one of the other estheticians coached her or worked right beside her. I did this in part because we desperately NEED estheticians right now, and experience with actual clients is never a bad thing.
Normally, our new estheticians spend a couple of weeks doing spa attendant work, but I feel this is a bit stupid, honestly. All spa attendants do right now is clean and do laundry, and that is tedious and does not accomplish a whole lot. Sure, this is her work term as part of her program, but I've always believed that if you're doing a work term you should be doing the job you took all that specialized education for. How else are you going to get the experience necessary? So, I do expect a bit of push-back from my boss for my decision, but today it was either allow it or lose a group booking. And my decision worked in our favour.
I know I have another esthetician work-term student coming in on Tuesday, and I will play it by ear with her to see how she fares. We will have her do a couple days of spa attending work and go from there as needed.
I'm a bit excited, but also scared, to see where this whole thing may end up leading me. I do not know if I really ready to run the spa permanently. Or the hotel for that matter. It's all just a matter of time!
