Hahahah! This would never happen in a million years....

A couple of nights ago I had a dream where I had somehow become a series regular on Star Trek: Discovery. I don't know how, because I'm not even an actor at this point (although it is something I'm seriously considering), but dreams don't have to make sense.

Anyhow, in the dream I had signed a contract to be a guest for a local sci-fi convention, a convention that I used to be involved in until a few months ago when I was unceremoniously kicked off the committee (long story, but I was going to quit anyway), but they had no idea that I was the same person. I had been using a stage name instead of my current legal name or my soon-to-be-legal name, and all the convention committee knew for sure is that I was based out of NL so I would likely be a cheaper guest than most of their other ST guests.

Yeah, I know, how could they not know it's me, right? Well, in the dream I'd lost a considerable amount of weight and looked different than they were used to. And in any promo pictures and headshots I was wearing makeup or in character, so they were not able to recognize me.

In the dream I showed up on the first day of the convention - I had made it clear that as I lived in town that I didn't want them to put me up in the hotel and that I didn't need a driver sent to pick me up. That I enjoyed being able to make use of my own home after being away for filming for so long. Anyhow, I show up, no make up and dressed comfortably like I usually do, and someone from the committee stops me at the door when I walk in - "I thought you said you'd never come to one of our conventions ever again?"

My response? "Yeah, normally I wouldn't, but I signed a contract so here I am."

"What do you mean, you signed a contract?"

I point at the professional headshot of me that is posted in the foyer of the hotel. "That's me."

"No way. That's not you."

"Here's my ACTRA and SAG cards. I assure you, that's me. With full make-up on."

"But...your name?!"

"Stage name. Both my union cards show my stage name and my legal name, so is that enough proof for you?" (I have absolutely no idea if the ACTRA or SAG cards would include any of that...like I said, I'm not an actor :P )

The committee chairperson damn near lost their mind when they learned who I was, and admitted that if they knew who I actually was that they wouldn't have contacted my manager in the first place, regardless of how cheap I was willing to do the convention for. In the dream I got that on recording and had no problem sharing it with everybody via twitter...I'm evil, what can I say. Honestly, I only signed off on the appearance contract because I'd get paid for showing up at a convention run by people who don't exactly like me. Okay, a few of the people on the committee still like me, but the major players on the committee don't because I didn't play their stupid games.

For my actual appearances in the guest area and Q&A panels I wore full makeup so that fans would recognize me from the promo material, but it was hilarious to see the reaction from people who realized/knew who I actually was. More than a few people asked why I left the committee, and thought it had something to do with going into acting, and I made it clear that while I had planned on quitting the committee anyway, the choice had been taken from me simply because of a comment I'd made on a friend's private FB wall, which somebody had felt the need to report back to the committee, and that I hadn't even been given a chance to explain myself before I'd been told that I'd been spoken to before about what I publicly post, even though that wasn't true at all. I didn't go into any further detail than that, but did say that it turned out to be a good thing because I might not have found the time to go to auditions and become a professional actor. Of course, the people responsible for me being tossed off the committee could only stand in the back of the room and fume silently - it's not like they could refute anything I was saying without people losing their shit, and also making it clear exactly what they're like on the committee.

Too bad it was only a dream!
